Explanation Writing

To support students with their class inquiry of ‘Change’ we are looking at explanation writing,

We will look at:

  • the purpose and structure of explanations
  • the grammar/language features of explanations ( nouns, present tense verbs and conjunctions)
  • Nouns – names of people, place and objects
  • Present tense verbs – actions verbs and being verbs (is, are)
  • Conjunctions – words like ‘so’ and ‘because’ that are used to add more information

Ways to help at home:

  • talk with your child about their class inquiry on Changes
  • visit the library ¬†and use the internet to find information
  • It’s important that students don’t copy chunks of information from books – can they say it in their own way and understand the words they are saying?
