Specialised Programmes

Specialised learning at Point View School enriches the curriculum, offering learners opportunities to explore, create, perform, and grow through a diverse range of engaging programmes.

STEM

Point View School has made a significant investment in developing a strong STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) programme for our learners. This is seen as a special attribute of Point View School and it is run by specialist teacher, Stuart Rankin. The programme has been running successfully for many years and provides all learners with exciting opportunities to explore innovation, creativity, and problem-solving.

Throughout the year, learners participate in a range of STEM events, challenges, and school-wide competitions that encourage curiosity, collaboration, and critical thinking. These experiences help learners develop important future-focused skills while fostering a passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Music

Music is a vibrant and important part of school life at Point View School. Whether in the classroom, the Performing Arts Centre (PAC), the school hall, or within the wider community, music provides rich opportunities for learners to develop creativity, confidence, and performance skills.

All learners take part in regular classroom Music lessons held in our spacious Performing Arts Centre. Through music, learners develop a wide range of skills aligned with the New Zealand Curriculum, including listening, singing, performing, composing, and appraising music both individually and as part of a group. Music also supports self-expression, collaboration, confidence, and self-discipline. Wherever possible, musical learning is connected across the curriculum so that all students can participate and experience success, regardless of their ability level. Learners also participate in weekly syndicate singing sessions and enjoy sharing their learning at syndicate and whole-school assemblies.

Learners in Years 3–6 who learn an instrument or enjoy singing can participate in a range of musical groups including Orchestra, Only Boys Aloud and Only Girls Aloud (choirs), Ukulele Bands, Bucket Drumming, and the newly formed Year 2/3 Ensemble - The Coda Pops! The school rock band - Rock Ninjaz - have been very successful at the 2024 and 2025 RockShop BandQuest.

These groups perform regularly within the school at assemblies, Grandparents Day, graduation, and special events, as well as representing the school at local Eastern Music Festivals and community performances throughout the year. These experiences provide valuable opportunities for learners to perform together and celebrate their developing talents. Learners who learn an instrument are also encouraged to perform individually at syndicate and whole school assemblies.

Point View School is fortunate to have a well-resourced Performing Arts Centre with an extensive range of instruments. These include tuned percussion such as marimbas, xylophones, bass xylophones and glockenspiels, as well as untuned percussion, drum kit, bass, electric and acoustic guitars, a class set of ukuleles, upright pianos, a portable grand electric piano, and a growing collection of electric keyboards. The PAC is also equipped with a full sound system, projector, and presentation facilities to support performances and learning.

Itinerant music tuition is available outside of school hours (Check out After School Activities). Contact the school office for further information.

ENVIRO

At Point View School, we are committed to helping our learners develop a strong sense of responsibility for the environment and the world around them. This commitment reflects the meaning behind our school logo, which represents the connection between the land and the sea that surrounds our local community and the importance of caring for these environments for future generations.

Through a range of environmental learning opportunities, learners develop an understanding of sustainability and the role they can play in protecting our natural world. Our programmes encourage learners to respect and care for the land and waterways that are an important part of our local area, while developing the knowledge and skills needed to make positive environmental choices.

Together, we aim to nurture environmentally responsible citizens who value the relationship between people, land, and sea, and who are committed to contributing to a sustainable future for our community.

Kapa Haka

At Point View School, Kapa Haka is a vibrant and essential part of our school culture. Led by the expertise of Whaea Pengu (Chantel Anderson) and Matua Gary, our sessions held once a week provide a powerful space for our ākonga (learners) to connect with Te Ao Māori.

Our Kapa Haka programme is inclusive of all ages, with tailored sessions for:

  • Year 1: Collaborative sessions working alongside classroom teachers to introduce the foundations of rhythm and song.

  • Years 2–3: A dedicated group building confidence in performance and coordination.

  • Years 4–6: Our senior group, focused on leadership and mastering more complex waiata (songs) and haka.

Beyond the Performance

While our groups have the exciting opportunity to perform at various events and festivals across Auckland each year, the heart of the programme is about more than just the stage. Learners immerse themselves in Tikanga Māori, learning the values, customs, and protocols that underpin the performances.

Why it Matters for Our Learners

Taking part in Kapa Haka is an incredibly rewarding experience for learners. It fosters:

  • Identity and Belonging: Helping learners find their voice and take pride in the unique bicultural heritage of Aotearoa.

  • Confidence and Discipline: Standing together in a rōpū (group) builds immense self-assurance and teamwork.

  • Wellbeing: Singing and movement are proven to support emotional wellbeing and create strong social bonds between peers.

Kapa Haka provides a platform for every learner to shine, lead, and grow as a culturally connected citizen. We are so proud of the passion our learners bring to every session!
